Aussie actor Xavier Samuel will be playing Riley, a newborn vampire, in the third (?) installment of the popular movie series. Can he “out-pretty” the smoking Robert Pattinson and can he “out-muscle” Alex Meraz?

Xavier has done several movies in Australia such as the coming-of-age movie, Newcastle, so he’s got some cred to be proud of.

He grew up in Adelaide and graduated from Rostrevor College in 2001, and Flinders University Drama Centre in 2005. He played Hamlet in the graduate production. Since this time he has worked professionally in both theater and film. He plays the central character in an Australian feature film ‘September’, directed by Peter Carstairs, which was released in 2007 and featured in the Toronto International Film Festival.

His latest film Newcastle, directed by Dan Castle, had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2008. Xavier’s mangement company has also confirmed that Xavier has been cast in Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight franchise based on the best-selling books by Stephenie Meyer. In Eclipse, Xavier will play Riley, a good-looking college student and newborn vampire, who will do anything to help Victoria murder Bella.

Look who’s dressed in black leather coat? It’s our newest favorite Twilight hunk, Australian actor Xavier Samuel who, as we reported earlier, has been cast as Riley in the Twilight: Eclipse movie. He was caught here by them paparazzi in Vancouver where the movie is being filmed.

Let’s hope that Xavier will maintain his Australian “suniness” and not follow the route of Robert Pattinson who, whenever he’s photographed, looks sad, conflicted, lifeless and, to paraphrase Kathy Griffin, as if he’s ready to drop dead. Maybe Robert’s role is getting into him, eh?
