Michelle Obama Fashion Critics: Eele, Scaasi, and de la Renta

Michelle Obama Fashion Critics: Black Artists Association (Amnau Eele): Ugh. Some people need to grow up. What’s with all this nitpicking? Maybe the First Lady picked Isabel Toledo’s and Jason Wu’s designs because they are better and more suited for her. What’s wrong with that? I really don’t understand all these carping going on. It is soooo unnecessary.

Let’s all let go of our childish ways, people.

From WWD: Amid all the praise of First Lady Michelle Obama’s fashion choices for the inaugural festivities, the Black Artists Association is taking her to task for not wearing anything by an African American designer. Cofounder Amnau Eele said Wednesday she will make a formal appeal to the First Lady’s office on behalf of the BAA.

“It’s fine and good if you want to be all ‘Kumbaya’ and ‘We Are the World’ by representing all different countries. But if you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael, Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers do something too?” Eele said. The BAA leader was a runway model in her own right for Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Bill Blass and others.

Azzedine Alaïa to Michelle Critic Oscar de la Renta: You’re a Has Been
14 April 2009

We are so with Azzedine Alaïa on this one.

From WWD: Meanwhile, Alaïa scolded Oscar de la Renta for recently criticizing some of the First Lady’s sartorial moves (even though de la Renta praised her as well). “It’s not up to him to give her lessons; Michelle Obama is of her time; Oscar de la Renta is no longer,” scoffed Alaïa.

Oscar de la Renta’s criticism of Michelle Obama sounds a lot like sourgraping. Is Oscar a has-been as Azzedine sort of says? You bet he is. He is as has-been as last week’s newspaper. Go Michelle. Go away Oscar.

Octogenarian Arnold Scaasi on Michelle Obama’s Fashion Choices
24 April 2009

Arnold Scaasi on Michelle’s fashion choices:

Arnold Scaasi tells US fashion bible Women’s Wear Daily: “She’s great-looking, she has a great personality and she’s obviously very bright, but something is amiss.”

One source of his criticism is that Mrs Obama wore a cardigan when meeting our own dear Queen during the G20 summit earlier this month. “It should have been a jacket,” he huffs.

Arnold Scaasi, like other old white male really fashion designers (aka Wolfgang Joop), is pathetic. He’s almost 100 years old (born in 1931) and he still thinks he knows what is fashionable or not. Get a grip old man, fashion changes. Just because you had some success when you were younger doesn’t mean that you can continue to tell what women should or should not wear.

It really amazes us how gay male octogenarians (and septuagenarians) in the fashion industry delude themselves into thinking that, to use the words of Simon Cowell, they are still relevant and that clueless ladies should follow their dictates. What a load of crap. You don’t have the monopoly in good taste, you know.

Message to Arnold Scaasi: No you’re not relevant in this day and age. You’re just a pathetic oldie. Get your walking stick and shove it up your ass.
