Jeremy Kerr, an American man of Scottish descent, is suing the New Orleans Police Department after he was threatened with arrest for wearing a skirt. Hehe. He has a good point, no? If women, who used to only wear dresses or skirts can now wear pants, why can’t men wear skirts?
The Daily Mail reports:
In a sex discrimination case, the 37-year-old motorbike salesman said a police officer threatened to arrest him for his choice of clothing.
Kerr has filed a civil rights lawsuit in which he describes himself as a ‘heterosexual male of Scottish ancestry’ who was made a victim of discrimination by his choice of attire.
Legal papers reveal that Kerr was challenged by officer Glen Tate when he walked into a courthouse in New Orleans, Louisiana in May 2008.
The officer asked if he was a woman, and said to Kerr: “Are you going to make me arrest you and find out?” ‘
Kerr said: ‘He threatened to take me out of the courthouse and put me in Orleans Parish Prison over a simple choice of attire.’
In his lawsuit Kerr said he began wearing skirts in 2003 after a friend suggested he’d look as if he were in a kilt.
‘The comments are overwhelmingly positive,’ he said. ‘Women love it, people of all ages and all races love it across the board.
‘I’m a straight man. A lot of people seem to believe if I’m in a skirt it must mean that I’m gay. It’s a choice in clothing style. One hundred years ago women could only wear dresses and skirts, and men could only wear pants.’
Kerr is seeking damages of a nominal one dollar and an admission by police that they violated his civil rights.
A spokesman for the New Orleans Police Department had no comment.
We are so with Jeremy Kerr on this one. You go, Jeremy!
