Video: Ian Welch Catches a Stingray, Sets Record for Biggest "Fish" Caught

Hey look, an Englishman has caught himself a stingray five times his weight in Thailand. Says Ian Welch of his encounter with the stingray:

‘It dragged me across the boat and would have pulled me in, had my colleague not grabbed my trousers.’

‘It buried itself on the bottom. I tried with every ounce of power but it just would not budge. After half an hour my arms began shaking and after an hour my legs went.

‘Another 30 minutes went by and then I put a glove on and physically pulled the line with gritted teeth.’

‘As soon as we saw it there was just silence because everyone was just in awe of this thing.’

‘I was exhausted afterwards. I did very little for the rest of the day – and just had a cold beer.’

Ian was doing this stingray catching as part of a stingray tagging program. So the PETA people need not protest this one because the stingray was released afterwards.

Oh, Ian apparently made a record for catching the “biggest freshwater fish to be caught with a rod”. We must admit that we didn’t realize that a stingray is a “fish”.

Here’s the video of the Ian vs. stingray action:

N.B. Why is Ian being recognized alone while his Asian teammates are unnamed? It’s not like he caught it by himself alone. We would be very impressed if he did but he caught the stingray with the help of others. This is the kind of ridiculous western-centric media reporting that glorifies westerners and leaves other people anonymous.
