Never thought there’s such a thing as a counter-tenor but apparently there is. Here’s a Journal report on singer Joel Garcia, a counter-tenor. He recently performed at a German Moreno show. Do you think Joel can make it big in the music industry. Let’s wait and see.
Journal: Last Saturday, star builder German Moreno, set the spotlight on a young balikbayan with a unique and powerful voice spanning four octaves — Joel Garcia.
Joel’s rendition of One Moment in Time, a song requested by Kuya Germs, in GMA-7’s Walang Tulugan, literally brought down the house.
The studio audience fell dead silent as Joel began to sing.
Prior to singing, Pilita Corrales, in her introductory remarks, said Joel’s voice was “different and unique.”
Kuya Germs, meanwhile, described it as “sensational.” Joel is a countertenor.
According to him, “Countertenors are usually male classical singers with voices higher than tenors. There are many in the international stage such as Alfred Deller, David Daniels, and Andreas Scholls.
“The latter two sing in opera leading roles. There are also pop singers who are countertenors or whose voices come close to countertenors.
“Among them are Michael Jackson, Wayne Newton and Smokey Robinson.”
These are stateside vocalists. In Joel, the Philippines has its very own countertenor, doing pop, R&B, gospel as well as classical music.
Joel can do Michael Jackson to perfection but he prefers to sing in his own style.
That style was honed by long years of study in classical music under Prof. Larry Paxton, a well known and respected classical music guru in Hawaii, and Charlotte Rothschild.
In pop and R&B, his learning curve was charted principally by Seth Riggs, famed Hollywood vocal guru who coached Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder and Anita Baker, among others.
He has also coached our very own Sarah Geronimo.
